Epidauros successful with patents for molecular diagnostics
Epidauros continues successful IP commercialization strategy for molecular diagnostic products
Bernried, Germany – March 26, 2007 - Epidauros Biotechnologie AG, the leading Pharmacogenetic Research Organization located in Bernried near Munich, announced today that the company has achieved several milestones following its strategy to fully exploit the commercial potential of its patent portfolio.
Following its licensing agreement with Osmetech last year, Epidauros has been able to secure an additional three non-exclusive license agreements with leading diagnostic companies, namely Luminex Molecular Diagnostics (formerly Tm Bioscience), Nanogen and Nanosphere. Financial details were not disclosed. The licensed variants can be used in combinatorial analysis with further genetic variants of CYP2D6 as a predictive marker for impaired enzymatic function putting patients at higher risk for adverse drug reactions or non-responsiveness. CYP2D6 plays a role in the metabolism of approx. 25% of the most commonly prescribed drugs to date.
Epidauros also announced that the company has recently obtained a European and a U.S. patent for two other pharmacogenetic markers. The European patent office granted a patent for Epidauros’ cytochrome P450 2D6 g.-1584C>G marker. In addition, the U.S. patent office granted a patent for Epidauros’ marker g.4444A>G of the nuclear receptor NR1I2, also known as hPXR.
With additional licensing agreements and two patents granted within the major markets, Epidauros expects that the breadth of its patent portfolio will attract further interest from diagnostic companies.
